3 ideas on how to make your site do well

  • You need to think about what it is you are offering. Your first page should be a short introduction to your offering and should be written only for your target audience. Try and read your site in 2 minutes – can you do it?
  • If you are bringing in people via google ads, you should have ecommerce; if they are using google ads they will want to compare and contrast products and buy immediately, accepting cheques – its really old hat and leaves you competitively disadvantaged.
  • You’ll need to make connections to your site. Write an article on subject and submit it to a site that offers free articles, making sure you can link to your site at the end of the article. Spend the next year doing the same once a month, get your friends to plus the site on a social bookmarking. Write a blog on your site.

So, tailor your copy, add instant payments and link to your site.

Sorry to challenge your assumptions, but …

Here are four assumptions. All untrue.

  1. A website can market itself
  2. All that matters is getting onto the front page of Google; get some good SEO and thats all you’ll ever need.
  3. Websites are a cheap way to get valuable customers to your door
  4. All you need is a web designer and google ads to publicise your website.

Ok, lets examine each one in turn.

  1. A website can market itself
  2. Well, this is a bit like building a fancy car and expecting to go without any petrol inside. Gone are the days when you could put something up and youd get a visit, miraculously. Instead, today you have to regularly promote your site on other sites.

  3. Google & SEO are all that matters.
  4. Certainly not true. Google is really more like a temperature gauge rather than the environment you are testing. Google is not the web! And fiddling around with SEO will get you nowhere. Better to write some good material on a relevant site to your own and use that to gain you referals

  5. Websites are cheap
  6. Well they are if you do them yourself! but then again your time is used so there is an expense however you look at it. Decide how much you want to make and calculate how much of that revenue will be taken up with online costs; it could be anything up to 20% – if more then you really need to take a step back and consider what you are doing; certainly if you are spending less than 2 or 3% and you havent enough for your wishes, then increase your expenditure

  7. You only need a designer and ads
  8. Thats not enough! you have to take an active role in your promotion!
